Saturday Night Live returned this week with host Zach Galifianakis. Galifianakis delivered laughs on the show with his third appearance as host.
The cold open was a scene from Fox & Friends. During the newscast, the reporters discussed gun control issues and James Collins. The reporters also talked with Mayor Bloomberg and poked fun at his ban on large sodas.
Galifianakis took the stage for his monologue and began to set the tone for the night. Galifianakis joked about people apologizing to him for thinking he looks like the guy from the Hangover. Then Galifiankis sat down at the piano to share some hilariously pointless stories over some melodic music.
The first sketch was called ‘Game of Game of Thrones.’ Galifiankais took the stage in a dragon costume to battle other contestants. Even though he knew everything about Game of Thrones, he failed to relay any knowledge about the real world. The sketch also included a cameo from Game of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Galifianikis’s character becomes excited once he sees the Thrones star and assures him that he would “make a great best friend” and “we could shower together, and I wouldn’t look down, even though I wanted to.”
The next sketch was a Jennifer Aniston look-alike contest. Galifiankis plays a man named Paul Evans, who finishes last in the contest. The cast dons Jennifer Aniston wigs, except for Kenan Thompson who dresses as Whoopi Goldberg. Galifiankis is a sore loser and he insults the other contestants as the host reads the list of winners. Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms appear as the two winners of the look-alike contest. The three Hangover stars stand together in their Aniston wigs, and Cooper and Helms reassure their friend with some words from the Friends theme song.
After Of Monsters and Men took the stage, Seth Myers appeared for the ‘Weekend Update.’ Bill Hader appears as James Carville and he gives his opinion on gun control. Cecily Strong and Fred Armisen also appeared on the ‘Update’ as “the girl you wish you hadn’t started a conversation with at a party” and “the guy gasping one word over and over.” Hader’s Carville character earned the most laughs with phrases like “grab an alligator buddy.”
Next up was a sketch at an M&M Store. Galifiankis plays a new greeter named Jim who has a problem insulting everyone he works with. Overall, the sketch was one of the night’s misfires and Galifiankis’ half-hearted apologies were rarely funny.
Another one of the night’s low-points was a sketch involving Michael Jordan’s wedding. The highlight of this sketch was an appearance by Dikembe Mutumbo. Mutumbo gave a toast to the couple and the show parodied his voice and commercial appearances.
The final sketch of the night was the return of the ‘Darrell’s House’ sketch. The sketch showcased Galifianakis’ quirkiness and included a cameo from Jon Hamm.
