This episode focuses on gay rights and features Iggy and The Stooges. They stop by to talk about their new album Ready to Die.
The episode starts with Colbert talking about Jason Collins coming out of the closet. He came out as black and gay. This is Colbert’s worst nightmare. He can’t use phrases like take it to the hoop or jam the rim. The most important thing he can’t say is touch each other’s penises. Marriage and basketball is for making babies; just ask Wilt Chamberlain. Colbert just hopes that gays don’t touch any of his other sports.
Colbert says that the end of straight America is upon us. Just acknowledging that you support traditional marriage makes you a bigot. Colbert believes that thinking a gay relationship is wrong in the eyes of God and that homosexuals are going to hell, doesn’t make him a bad person. This event leads into the segment “The Word”.
In the segment, Colbert talks about Pat Buchanan. Buchanan believes that gay rights movement is no way similar to the civil rights movement. He also goes on to say that there will be anarchy in the Church’s ranks because priests and pastors will be teaching civil disobedience. The jest of the segment focuses on Colbert wanting gays and straights to rise up and fight those who may oppress us all.
Colbert also likes Yelp. Now you can use it to check reviews for jails. Colbert wants to look out for the violent criminals in his audience. Don’t get arrested in Queens, New York. That place has broken toilets and reek of failure.
In the final minutes of the show, Iggy Pop sits down with Colbert. Pop said that he started the band to be free. He didn’t want to obey anybody. At 19 he got his first mug shot because he drove drunk and fell asleep at the wheel. He performs for the crowd here is a clip:
