This was not a surprise at all. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the first Marvel property to be turned into a TV series since Disney bought the company, has earned a series order from ABC.

S.H.I.E.L.D. has been in the works since it was greenlit in August 2012, just after Joss Whedon’s The Avengers broke box office records. Whedon signed to co-write the pilot with his brother Jed and Jed’s wife Maurissa Tancharoen and also directed. The project focuses on the agents of the government organization that brought the team of superheroes together and has appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the cast includes Ming-Na (ER), Clark Gregg (whose character died in The Avengers, but he’s back!), Brett Dalton (Killing Lincoln), Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain DeCaestecker and Chloe Bennet.

E! News also confirmed that a preview of the series will air Sunday night during Once Upon A Time.

In other ABC news, EW reports that the network has confirmed that Nashville is getting a second season. The other renewed shows are pretty obvious decisions. Modern Family, Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy, Last Man Standing, The Middle, Castle and Suburgatory.

Other pilots that got series orders include Super Fun Night (co-produced by Conan O’Brien), The Goldbergs, Back In The Game (which will feature James Caan), Trophy Wife (with Malin Akerman) and Mixology (from the Hangover writers). Drama pilots that will continue on include Mind Games, Lucky 7, Betrayal and Killer Women.

The ABC shows that have been cancelled are Happy Endings, Malibu Country, Body of Proof and Red Widow. Also, How to Live with Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life has more words in its title than episodes that got to air before it was cancelled.
