Another season of Saturday Night Live is nearing its end, which means more changes are on the way. Bill Hader is the latest cast member to confirm his exit.
In an interview with the New York Times, Hader said that after eight seasons, he’s finally decided that it’s time to go. Hader joined the show in 2005 as a featured player and became a full cast member in 2006. He is best known for his incredible impersonations and the hilarious Stefon, a connoisseur of bizarre New York nightclubs that no one would actually want to go to.
“It was a hard decision, but it has to happen at some point,” the 34-year-old said. “It got to a point where I said, ‘Maybe it’s just time to go.’”
Hader recently appeared in Men in Black 3 and has also starred in Tropic Thunder, Subperbad and Adventureland. In 2012, he was nominated for an Emmy for supporting actor in a comedy series.
“In terms of intelligence and talent, he was in that same tradition,” executive producer Lorne Michaels told the Times. “He was so completely committed to the art of it and enough a student of it that there’s something strikingly original. He didn’t explode onto the air, but gradually he found his voice, and that became a huge thing.”
This is the latest big change for SNL. Seth Meyers will be leaving after this fall to take over Late Night. There could be other changes, with Fred Armisen as a major uncertainty. Armisen currently stars in IFC’s Portlandia.
There’s also Jason Sudeikis, who was rumored to be leaving last season, but he did come back.
Michaels said that Hader isn’t getting the kind of magical, emotional sendoff that Kristen Wiig got last year. Mick Jagger hosted that episode and sand “Ruby Tuesday” for her.
“My joke was, we’ll start singing ‘Ruby Tuesday’ and just say bye to Kristen again,” Hader told the Times. “I can just do a little wave at goodnights, and that signifies it.”
Maybe Stefon could make one last appearance to tell us about the perfect New York nightclub to celebrate at for the last show for an SNL legend.
SNL's last episode of the season airs Saturday with Ben Affleck and Kanye West as guests.
