There was a frightening moment at the Cannes film festival on Friday while jury members Christoph Waltz and Daniel Auteuil were being interviewed during the live broadcast of a French entertainment show. Noises that sounded like gunshots were heard in the area and the actors were rushed off the set.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the incident occurred while Waltz and Auteuil were on Le Grand Journal. While THR was told by security that it was just fireworks, an eyewitness said that a man did have a gun.
Fox News reports that someone was heard yelling, “there’s someone shooting!” There were local reports that a man had fired two blanks. Canal Plus also said that the man appeared to be holding a grenade.
Thankfully, no one was injured and the show later resumed. “The show must go on,” an announcement told the crowd.
Fox News notes that the Nice-Matin newspaper reported that the man was held by police, who found that he was carrying a starter’s pistol, pocket knife and plastic grenade.
The incident came just after news broke that a thief had made off with over $1 million worth of Chopard jewelry by pulling an entire safe out of a hotel room. Chopard is a main sponsor of the festival and lends its jewelry to the stars to wear on the red carpet.
