Christopher Abbott announced last month that he would not be returning to the HBO hit Girls’ for its highly anticipated 3rd season. His co-star and on-screen love interest, Allison Williams, opened up about how his departure will affect the show and the storyline for her character.
TVline talked to the Girls’ star who recently started filming for season 3. Abbott’s exit has had “a huge effect on our show and [on the character of] Marnie specifically,”. Abbott who played Charlie on the show had just gotten back together with Williams character, Marnie at the end of Season 2. It looked like they would be together when the show returned.
Williams believes that if Abbott’s character had been able to stay, that season 3 would have been about Marnie and Charlie’s relationship “It’s almost as if we skipped her third season and have gone on to single Marnie,” Williams shared. The break-up “means that Marnie is now piecing herself back together.”
The New York Post reported last month about Abbott’s departure, who’s rep cited scheduling conflicts with other projects. But there were rumors his exit was due to creative differences with creator and star of the show, Lena Dunham. “They’ve just started work on Season 3, and Chris is at odds with Lena,” according to a source. “He didn’t like the direction things are going in, which seems a bit odd since the show put him on the map.”
