Something I've always wanted to do was learn to sail. The idea of packing essential supplies on a boat and taking off for a trip around the world has always been a dream of mine. Unfortunately, life has other plans for me. Sailing is a lot more complicated than it seems and requires several lessons and years of experience to navigate safely. And don't forget the cost of a boat!

But we found a nice alternative to sailing the high seas with Manhattan By Sail. Manhattan By Sail combines the adventure of sailing with the scenic views of Manhattan for a trip to remember.

Manhattan By Sail is a great day trip for the family whether you live in New York or are just visiting. Not only can you see up close the real workings of a sail boat - children are encouraged to help the sail team for a wonderful hands-on experience - but you can get one of a kind views of America's most famous city. Because you're on a sailboat, you won't hear the constant drone of an engine. All you'll hear is the splash of the waves against the boat and the sound of the wind cutting through the sails.

The tour doesn't even sound like your typical tour ride. There's no loudspeaker system pointing out the sights. The crew is very informative of their route and their functions aboard the boat, and are more than happy to explain what you're seeing and what they're doing.

You can bring your own food aboard for a sailing picnic or you can buy a drink from the boat's well stocked bar. A word of caution: this is a sailboat and not a massive yacht. While the ride is incredible, there can be a lot of movement which may cause some seasickness.

Manhattan By Sail also offers sunset cruises for a romantic tour of the city's coastline.
