Photographers at the Cannes Film Festival red carpet snapped Marion Cotillard crying, but were they tears of sadness?

The Oscar-winner laughed as she wiped away tears, which were caused by the bright sunshine during the red carpet for Cotillard’s new film, The Immigrant .

Though the beautiful weather is most likely the cause for Cotillard’s tears, as she was spotted with large dark sunglasses during a press conference, the French actress has two reasons to be crying tears of joy.

The first, the incredible praise Cotillard has received for her portrayal of a Polish immigrant in James Gray’s The Immigrant . The film received a standing ovation after its Cannes premier, and Oscar buzz for Cotillard.

USA Today reports Cotillard had to learn Polish for the role which she found to be, “insane.”

"I had to work every night and day to get it right. It needed to be perfect,” Cotillard said at a press conference. “It's a very complicated language and I had 20 pages of text (and at first) I could only understand two words."

Despite the “lengthy process” of learning Polish, Cotillard managed to deliver a marvelous performance, triumphing not only on the screen, but also in the courtroom.

A woman accused of harassing the 37-year-old was recently sentenced to mental-health treatment and probation, following a series of threatening messages and videos to a Cotillard fan site. The woman, Teresa Yuan, pled guilty to transmission of threats to injury.

Yuan asked Cotillard if she wanted to “play Russian roulette” in one video obtained by the FBI, E! News reports.

“But would you still like it that at least there's one bullet in this piston?” Yuan said, according to court documents. “You have only one out of six chances of being shot. You have five out of six chances of living."

Yuan was sentenced May 17 and ordered to stay away from Cotillard.

The Immigrant will be released in France and the Netherlands this month. No release date for the United States has been set.
