Michelle Rodriguez revealed to NBC Latino’s Cafecito host Feliciano Garcia that yet another Fast and Furious will begin filming in September and is set for release summer 2014.
Rodriguez lead character in the franchise, Letty Ortiz, was revived in the most recent Fast and Furious 6 , in theatres now. Though Rodriguez has expressed in the past that she would like to take a pause from acting and pursue a career in writing, she is on board for the seventh installment of the series.
“I’d love to [write],” Rodriguez said, before admitting that with filming on the horizon, she’ll “barely have time to breathe.” New York Daily News reports.
For now, the Cosmo for Latinas 2013 Fun Fearless Latina of the Year is celebrating the success of Fast and Furious 6 , which had opening weekend box office sales of $160 million. The blockbuster owes some of its triumph at the box office to the re-emergence of Rodriguez’s character.
“What pressure I felt,” Rodriguez said, explaining her emotion upon being asked to participate in the sixth installment. “Just to know that the fans asked for me back and that Vin [Diesel] fought tooth and nail to bring me back to the franchise,” Rodriguez said.
Despite her aspirations to write, Rodriguez is proud of her role in Fast and Furious 6 as Letty Ortiz gives female audience members a strong woman character who’s not just a pretty face.
“Now, in today’s day and age, girls actually despise a girl who’s weak,” she said. “Even the guys react negatively to the hot girl that’s just there to bone. They’re like ‘I can go to Hooters for that.’”
Further, Rodriguez feels that Letty Ortiz can act as the female superhero women in this day in age need the most, and one the actress feels she lacked growing up.
"There aren't a lot of chicks that I like at all in comics. As a matter of fact, in order to have one, I'd probably have to invent one. They just don't exist now,” Rodriguez said, according to Digital Spy .
Based on audience response, it seems like Rodriguez has done just that in the beloved Letty Ortiz.
