Chief content officer for Netflix Ted Sarandos aspires to make his company the next big thing in television production.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , Sarandos revealed that his next phase for Netflix is to churn out up to 16 television shows next year.
“It’s feasible that we would double the load that we did this year [with eight new shows],” Sarandos explained. “I want to be able to appeal to all of those tastes and across demos. Hemlock Grove is totally different from House of Cards . I think we can support a lot of specific tastes.”
Sarandos not only wants to produce original television series, but gain Emmy attention. Nominations for Netflix’s political drama House of Cards would trust Internet television into the mainstream, something Sarandos does not think is too far into the future. Of course, mainstream acceptance is not without its challenges.
“It puts it on the same playing field with the best of broadcast, cable and premium television and resets the expectations of the industry and of the consumer,” Sarandos said, as reported by U.S. News . “We'll have to challenge conventional thinking among the voters."
Nominations for the Critics Television Awards were announced on Tuesday. Netflix’s House of Cards earned two nominations for the performances of Kevin Spacey and Corey Stall. Though the number of nominations is small compared HBO’s 21 nominations, the fact that the Internet streaming sight is getting attention has significance, as critics are willing to place Netflix in the same ranks as major broadcasting networks.
Perhaps Sarandos’ Emmy dream is not quite out of the question.
