Police fired tear gas and water cannons on Friday at protesters occupying Taksim Square in an effort to preserve the city-center park.
Protesters have occupied Taksim Gezi Park for four days in solidarity against an urbanization project that would turn the park into a shopping mall, according to CNN.
The police attack on the demonstrators escalated violently and followed several calmer dawn police raids that have taken place in the past few days.
More than 100 people were injured, including several in serious condition, according to the Guardian.
Approximately six or seven people were taken to the hospital and hundreds were treated on the scene for symptoms related to the tear gas, reports Businessweek.
Sirri Sureyya Onder, a Turkish lawmaker from the pro-Kurdish peace and Democracy Party, was among the injured. A tear-gas canister fired by police hit Onder in the shoulder at close range.
Onder is reportedly in an intensive care unit in serious condition.
Television footage from Thursday show Onder at Gezi Park blocking the construction machines and bellowing “there is no license.”
Another Turkish lawmaker, Sezgin Tanrikulu of the opposition Republican People’s Party, was also hospitalized.
Istanbul Gov. Huseyin Avni Mutlu said that 63 people have been detained.
