It turns out by retirement, Steven Soderbergh only meant from films. The director, whose Behind the Candelabra premieres on HBO Sunday night, is reportedly in talks to direct a miniseries titled The Knick for Cinemax. Clive Owen is currently attached to star.

According to Deadline, which first reported the news, Soderbergh would direct all 10 episodes of the show, which is set in New York in 1900. Owen will lead a team of surgeons and nurses making major medical strides at the Knickerbocker Hospital. Jack Amiel and Michael Begler have penned the pilot and will executive produce with Soderbergh, Owen, Anonymous Content’s Michael Sugar and Gregory Jacobs.

Soderbergh was in Cannes earlier this week for the premiere of Behind the Candelabra, which stars Michael Douglas as Liberace. While he’s done with feature films, he has given fans a look at his future endeavours, including a novella that he is still tweeting.

Businessweek also reported that he is breaking into clothing. He launched Extension 765 and is selling shirts with extremely obscure cinema references. One shirt has the license plate for Gene Hackman’s The French Connection car, while another has the name of the newspaper run by Charles Foster Kane in Citizen Kane.
