Tom Cruise has signed on to star as Ethan Hunt for a fifth installment of the Mission Impossible franchise.
Entertainment Weekly confirmed Cruise’s role in the fifth installment, while Deadline notes that Paramount and Skydance have also confirmed. However, the production companies are not revealing who will write or direct the film.
Deadline notes that Christopher McQuarrie is expected to take on the director’s seat. Cruise will both star in and produce the film.
According to New York Daily News, fans speculated that a fifth M:I would be in the works after Mission Impossible- The Ghost Protocol exploded at the box office. The film raked in $685 million globally.
Mission: Impossible first kicked off in 1996 gaining widespread craze. Thus far the franchise has earned over $2 billion in its nearly two decade run.
As Daily News notes, it is unclear with M:I IV costar Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg and Paula Patton will return for the future film.
