Creator Lauren Iungerich will be leaving the successful MTV comedy series when it wraps its season three production tomorrow.
Deadline characterizes Iungerich’s leaving as a mutual parting of ways between her and the network. It was said to be a difficult decision based on a combination of work and personal reasons.
“Awkward is a wonderful series and we appreciate the creativity and devotion Lauren brought to this show,” MTV Programming President Susanne Daniels said.
Awkward received a lot of positive buzz from reputable TV critics such asThe New York Times. The show is known for its realism (though it definitely has its melodramatic moments) into the adolescent mind. Centering around a suburban high school, Awkward showcases the trials and tribulations of surviving adolescent life. Though the third season received a handful of negative reviews, the show still remains one of MTV’s most popular.

Three months ago, Iungerich was also working on an MTV comedy pilot for the network called Hot Mess, which she stepped down from. The network decided to not go through with the show.
The second half of the third season of Awkward will debut in October. MTV is currently seeking a new showrunner for a potential fourth season.
