Now that gay marriages will resume in California and the Supreme Court found the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional, Modern Family co-creator Christopher Lloyd said that he is considering marrying the acclaimed show’s two gay characters.

“It’s a real possibility,” Lloyd told Entertainment Weekly when asked if season five might see Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) get married. “It’s certainly something we are contemplating on the show in ways we wouldn’t have in prior seasons.”

Lloyd added that the writers “had a number of conversations” and that “As you can imagine in Cam and Mitchell’s life, they would be feeling that a door has opened that was closed to them. Wouldn’t it be pretty tempting to think about walking through it? We imagine a lot of gay couples today are deciding whether to get married now that it’s open to them. From our standpoint, that’s something to explore.”

Lloyd noted that they have had to discuss the possibility before and have faced pressured from groups like the ACLU to have the couple marry. But Lloyd said that they “didn’t want to make an overt political statement” in the show.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that both actors took to Twitter to respond to the historic Supreme Court ruling on DOMA.

As we previously reported, the Supreme Court said that DOMA, which barred federal recognition of same-sex marriage, is unconstitutional. The Court declined to make a ruling on Proposition 8, saying that the challengers had no legal standing to put it on the ballot in the first place. That means that gay marriages can resume in California.
