Angelina Jolie has been all over the news lately due to the announcement of her optional double mastectomy and now even more so due to the fact that she’s planning on having her ovaries removed also.

Angelina Jolie has been very public with her operations and also the reasoning behind them: the actress has a 50% chance of ovarian cancer and an 87% chance of breast cancer because of a faulty BRCA1 gene according to Angelina’s own article in the New York Times. As an actress who is often in the spotlight for her beauty and her body, one can’t help but wonder how the Mr. & Mrs. Smith actress is holding up.

The actress made her first public appearance with husband Brad Pitt at the World War Z London premiere looking stunning as usual. Pitt explained to USA Today that the reason why Angelina felt so compelled to be public with her operations is to show the world that this isn’t necessarily a scary thing. By going through with the operations, Angelina is decreasing the risk of ovarian and breast cancer, both of which took her mother in 2007 and her aunt earlier this month.

“It can be an empowering thing,” he explained. “Something that makes you stronger and us stronger.”
