Carey Mulligan has turned down an offer to play former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in the upcoming biopic Rodham .

As previously reported by The Celebrity Café , Mulligan was the frontrunner for the role, up against Jennifer Lawrence, Scarlett Johansson and Emma Stone. However, The Hollywood Reporter says that the The Great Gatsby star has passed on the offer.

The biopic will focus on the New York senator’s early life in the political sphere as a lawyer on a committee to impeach President Richard Nixon. Rodham will also focus on the Democrat’s early feelings for her current husband and future president, Bill Clinton.

Director James Ponsoldt The Independent early on in his search that each actress under consideration are all, “wonderful actresses.”

“We’re very fortunate that a lot of really great actors are interested in playing these roles,” the director continued. “We’re in an enviable position.”

The biopic was penned by Young il-Kim, who said that despite reports of racy scenes, he has every intent of portraying the politician in a tasteful light. "I didn't write 50 Shades of Rodham , as some news outlets are suggesting. I am a boring prude with little imagination."

"It's an evolving process so I don't know,” Kim said, when asked if the film would include sex scenes. “She was an attractive 26-year-old with an amazing future. And that's our thematic focus."
