It is no wonder why Jane The Virgin was one of the first buys for the CW’s coming season – having been translated into nine languages, gaining a popular following in multiple countries, and drawing in a large share, this series seems to get to the hearts of many people.
According to Deadline, Juana la Virgen centers around a 17 year old who gets pregnant by artificial insemination because of a hospital error. Jane is a hard-working religious teenager, so this situation is definitely a stickier one.
Jennie Snyder Urman, creator of CW drama series Emily Owens MD, is writing the adaptation for CBS Studios and producer Ben Silverman’s Electus. The executive producers would include Urman, Silverman, and Gary Pearl and Jorge Granier.
Pearl is a U.S. format rights producer who has a partnership with Granier, the managing director of RCTV International. It was Pearl who reached out to Silverman, as he has extensive experience adapting Latin American series into U.S. sitcoms/dramas. Some of his credits include ABC’s Ugly Betty, based on Yo Soy Betty, and the upcoming ABC series Killer Woman, based on an Argentine Crime, Mujeres Asesinas.
In the meantime, you can watch episodes of Juana la Virgen on Hulu, and see if it’s something you would be interested in sticking with on the CW. (Assuming the network does indeed pick it up!)
