It is London’s turn to host one of the most anticipated races in the arcades of film. Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Ludacris, the Rock and the rest of the gang are back for the another ride-to-die exploit in Fast & Furious 6.
Finally, our heroic criminals have everything they have ever wanted. They are free and at peace. There’s no more running or hiding. But living in paradise, while welcoming the newest member of the racing team, somehow is not enough. After so many movies of running, the much desired happy ending simply doesn’t fit them.
To save them from their delightful boredom comes Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson). He hires Toretto (Diesel) and his team to catch heartless terrorist Shaw (Luke Evans) in exchange for full pardons for the whole team. Shaw, however, is not an easy target. He happens to have a team of his own, which resembles Toretto’s except Shaw has Letty (Rodriguez).
I have a soft spot for Rodriguez’s role in this one. Not much in the movie hints Letty and Shaw’s relationship inclining to the romantic side. But Letty does feel the need to be a part of a group that means something. A family, maybe? Shaw’s team is all about precision, you see. There is no warmth in his words, acts, or plans. And you would think that kind of group would suit little Ms. Spitfire. And it does. Until she meets Dom.
A man who seems to know more about her than anyone, rescues Letty in every sense of the word. Despite of all her tomboyish efforts and in the middle of her consternation (where people seem to get overly defensive) this could very well be the softest yet the most powerful Letty has ever been.
Other than that, the cars, the races, the half naked girls at races were pretty much what you would expect from this franchise. They also blow up this cargo plane which, by the way, watching it in the previews sort of killed it for me.
As entertaining as movies in the summer should be, Fast and Furious 6 makes it happen, undeterred by the Rock’s S.O.B’s battology. I heard they are signed up for the 7th and 8th installment. So buckle up, people!
