Lance Corporal James Wharton details how Prince Harry stopped his unit from a homophobic attack in his new memoir, Out in the Army.

According to Us Weekly, Wharton describes how he openly boasted about a late night tryst with an officer only to realize that his fellow men did not approve of his sexual orientation.

According to Daily Mail, six men approached Wharton following his revealing, which took place back in 2008, threatening his life. Wharton ran from the men and discussed the threats brought against him with Prince Harry, who was his commander at the time.

“I told him, “I think I’m going to be murdered by the infantry,” he writes. “I climbed into the turret and talked Harry through exactly what had happened. He had a complete look of bewilderment on his face.”

Continuing he explains, “I couldn’t stop the tears from welling up in my eyes. He said, ‘Right I’m going to sort this s*** out once and for all.’ He climbed out of the tank and I poked my head out of the turret a few moments later to see him having a go.”

Wharton goes on to praise Harry, noting if it wasn’t for his quick response he would have suffered a severe “beating.”

“I will always be grateful to Harry and I will never forget what happened. Until he went over and dealt with everything I was on track for a battering,” he writes.

Out in the Army hits the shelves June 18.
