George Lucas unveiled statues of two of his most iconic characters in his hometown of San Anselmo, California.
Statues of Yoda of the Star Wars franchise and Indiana Jones from the Indiana Jones films made their debut in the new Imagination Park today (June 22). Lucas himself was present to show off the bronze statues, having donated the land for the park and funding the creation of the two statues. Berkley artist Lawrence Noble created the bronze sculptures.
The National Post reports that 500 Lucas fans witnessed the unveiling of 6-foot-3 Indiana Jones and 2 ½ foot tall Yoda in the 8,700 square foot park.
“I’ve never seen so many people in downtown San Anselmo,” said Annabelle Reber, who came to view the statues. “We’re very excited that the town finally has a central gathering spot.”
Other bystanders echoed Reber’s excitement about the new park.
“I am happy with the park. It has now become a place for the community to meet instead of a building that never seemed to find a purpose,” resident Dan Baker said. “Our kids (saw) the statues unveiled today, and in time, they can bring their own kids here.”
This is the second new home for Yoda this year, as Lucas handed over the Star Wars universe to Disney. Popwatch reports that Lucas will remain involved in future productions and continuations to the franchise as “creative consultant.”
Though he is set to remain involved, Lucas said he has not kept in contact with future Star Wars director J.J. Abrams.
“I have not spoken to J.J. He’s been busy with Star Trek ,” Lucas said. “I’m sure he’ll let me know when he’s got some questions.”
