Glee actress Charice Pempengco became emotional during an interview on The Buzz when she revealed to Filipino host Boy Abunda that she is a lesbian.
While discussing the actress’ sexuality, Pempengco was asked by the host whether or not she is a lesbian. According to People Magazine Pemengco replied in her native language, “Yes … I am.”
"I have deep gratitude for the Filipinos because they are the ones who know who I really am,” Pemengco said while explaining why she decided to reveal her sexuality on the talk show, “I don't know what the problem is because for me, there is no problem with that. So now I ask for forgiveness from those who don't understand. And those who cannot accept. I apologize: I understand you."
Speculation about the singer’s sexuality began after she drastically changed her image, cutting off her long hair and ditching dresses for more masculine attire.
The Daily Mail reports that Pemengo followed up her revelation by saying, “Now, I feel free. I can go out of the house without fear and be certain that I'm not stepping on anybody's toes.”
The 21-year-old singer got her first taste of fame when she appeared on Ellen after comedian Ellen DeGeneres saw one of Pemengco’s YouTube videos and invited her to perform on her talk show.
She has since performed with international superstars such as Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli.
Pemengco appeared on the hit Fox show Glee during its second season. She played a foreign exchange student named Sunshine Corazon.
