Since Matt Smith and the BBC announced that the actor won’t be returning to Doctor Who speculation on who will fill his shoes has run wild. Some have suggested that a woman should finally take the role, with Dame Helen Mirren in mind. Mirren responded to the speculation, saying that she probably doesn’t have a chance, but she said that it’s time for a female Doctor.

During an interview with The Associated Press, Mirren was told that a bookmaker has offered 25-1 odds that she gets the job.

“Oh, please — I would put much longer odds on it than that,” she said. “But I think it’s absolutely time for a female Doctor Who.”

She continued, “I'm so sick of that man with his girl sidekick. I could name at least 10 wonderful British actresses who would absolutely kill in that role.”

Smith’s departure was announced last week. He has played the role since 2010 and his final episode will be the Christmas special that marks the iconic show’s 50th anniversary.

According to The Week, BAFTA winner Olivia Colman and comedian Miranda Hart have also been actresses whose names have been linked to the Doctor.
