Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck’s marriage was the center of plenty of rumors earlier this month after Affleck’s now-famous Oscar speech. But the marriage might not have happened in the first place if Affleck’s beloved Boston Red Sox didn’t win the World Series in 2004.

During an interview with USA Today while filming Draft Day in Cleveland, Garner joked that if the Sox hadn’t swept the St. Louis Cardinals and ended the 86-year World Series drought, “I don’t think I’d be married with three kids.”

She added with a laugh, “Because I think I would have been considered a jinx. Boston fans are pretty serious about superstition. There’s something about Boston fans, they really think they can control it by what shirt they wear and where they sit — the whole thing.”

Garner is a Texas native and grew up in West Virginia, but since she married Affleck in 2005, he has turned her into a Red Sox fan. She said that she was actually hurt to see Johnny Damon leave the team. “I couldn’t take it,” she told USA Today. “It really busted my gut, because I really root for the team and the idea that they’re all in it to be together, and I know it’s not that way.”

Meanwhile, Affleck recently spoke with Extra, saying that their three kids are enough. “I hope not!” he said when asked if Garner would like any more additions. “No, that’s not going to happen. We’re in a really good place… three is good, that’s enough!”

The Argo actor/director and Garner appeared on Saturday Night Live last month to joke about his Oscars acceptance speech. Affleck had called the essence of marriage work. Garner joked, “Gift! I would have said, 'Thank you to my wife, our marriage is a gift!'” if she made the speech.
