Jennifer Lopez’s next foray into television starts tonight. The Fosters, a new series about a complex family that she produces, starts on ABC Family tonight.
The new drama has been in development since last year. The series focuses on a lesbian couple, with one as a cop and the other a teacher. They have a biological son and adopted twins. It was created by Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige, who will executive produce with Lopez and it got a series order in February.
"This series takes chances," Lopez said in a featurette about the show, reports ETOnline. “It's about a bi-racial lesbian couple who have biological and adopted children all living together as a family.”
Lopez added that she wants the show to make a positive impact. “If we can touch one adult or one child to embrace that concept, or that idea about love and acceptance, then we did our job.”
“You can kind of draw a line between any two characters and get a relationship that hasn't really been explored on TV before,” Paige added.
In an interview with TV Guide last week, Lopez said that she felt it was her duty to work on a show like this.
“It's irresponsible not to do TV like this if you get the chance,” the “Dance Again” singer said. “Like a lot of people, I was raised on idyllic shows like The Brady Bunch and Eight Is Enough. We need to put out the message that a family doesn't need to have one mom, one dad, one dog and a picket fence. A family is about love and acceptance.”
The Fosters premieres on ABC Family tonight at 9 p.m.
