Jennifer Lopez is opening up about her divorce from singer Marc Anthony and responding to critics about her racy stage outfits.
Lopez, who recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, spoke about her rough split from Anthony. According to E! News, Lopez said she worried the divorce would turn her off to the idea of love.
"When Marc and I decided to separate, I thought, 'I'm not going to let this turn me into someone unhopeful who doesn't believe [in love] anymore,'” Lopez said. “I don't want to just survive it. I wanted to grow from it. And I did learn a lot."
Lopez says the greatest thing she learned from the end of her third marriage was not who to love, but how to love.
“Most importantly, to love myself first,” Lopez explained. “As women, I don’t think we do that enough. We always love somebody else more than ourselves.”
The mother of twins Max and Emme has bounced back since the 2011 split, currently dating dancer 26-year-old Casper Smart, and meeting up with Anthony to parent their children. Despite having two young children, Lopez has been criticized for showing too much skin during performances.
The 43-year-old told The Telegraph that she doesn’t believe she pushes the racy envelope too far.
“I don’t think I’m any racier than any other female pop artist,” the singer said. “OK, I’ll wear a sexy outfit, but I think it’s more because my body shape’s a little different to other body shapes, so that’s not very fair.”
While Lopez is clearly comfortable showing skin during performances, she says she feels like herself when “surrounded by my kids and family on my mother’s couch.”
“That’s when I feel myself again,” the singer said. “That’s when I really remember who I am.”
