Kate Gosselin is defending herself in light of a photo surfacing on Twitter of the mother of eight seeming to mock Asians. In the photo that surfaced on Sunday, she’s wearing a Geisha headpiece and slanting her eyes with her fingers.
Twitter user Katie Deen posted the picture, writing “@Kateplusmy8 Makes fun of Asians with 8 half Korean children.”
She’s wearing a wedding band in the picture, which suggests it was taken before she divorced her ex-husband Jon Gosselin in 2009. They have eight kids together; twins Cara and Maddie, 12, and sextuplets Aaden, Collin, Joel, Leah, Alexis and Hannah, 9.
On Tuesday, Gosselin took to her website, where she explained herself.
“This was a happy memory of mine. It was a happy time for me and Jon, smiling and 'goofing off' together. Jon and I were opening fan mail together one afternoon...and when we opened up this plastic Asian dress-up wig sent from a caring fan, we smiled, each taking turns posing in it and snapping photos (on my phone) of each other,” she wrote.
She also wrote, "I married an Asian. I have eight biracial children, therefore I'm quite certain that I'm the last person that could be called a racist. I couldn't be more proud of my eight beautiful children and wouldn't change anything about them or their heritage."
She said her slanting her eyes made her ex-husband “smile” and "it's normal to talk about and even 'exaggerate' the feature differences between family members of a biracial family as they are noticed by curious growing children within the family.”
