At the 67th Annual Tony awards it was a fun night for the men of drag and Cyndi Lauper because Kinky Boot's ended up taking home a whopping six Tony awards.
According to USA Today, the entertaining yet sassy musical Kinky Boots won one of the biggest awards of the night for best musical. It also took home honors such as leading actor, composer, and Cyndi Lauper was honored with best score in which she couldn't have been more thrilled:
"I can't say I wasn't practicing in front of the shower curtain for a couple days for this speech," said Lauper. "All right, I gotta thank my mom for sharing all that wonderful music. I wrecked all her Broadway musicals when I was a kid, the cast albums. That's how I learned how to sing, and I want to thank her for sharing the music with me."
"And I want to thank Harvey Fierstein for calling me up. I'm so glad I was done with the dishes and I answered the phone."
Of course she was not the only one; Jerry Mitchell was honored for his choreography, John Shivers won for best sound Design, and Stephen Oremus one a big honor for best orchestration.
Billy Porter, who ran and won for best leading man in a musical, might have beat out his competitor Stark Sands, but he did pay his respects where it was due according to The Miami Herald:
"You are my rock, my sword, my shield. Your grace gives me presence. I share this award with you. I'm gonna keep it at my house! But I share it with you."
Pippin was not too far behind in Tony award wins receiving four wins including the win for Top revival and best leading actress for a musical:
"This is a childhood dream come true," said leading actress winner Patina Miller
"When you get it right, it makes for extraordinary theater," said Pippin producer Barry Weisler. "We got it right this time."
Andrea Martin won a Tony for best featured actress, and Diane Paulus received the honors for Best director of a musical and dedicated it straight to her family:
"To my parents who gave me the best gift a daughter could ever hope for: the encouragement to do what you want with your life, which for me was the theater, and I can only hope to be as good a mother to my two daughters, Natalie and Katharine, who are at home watching. This is for you, you are my joy."
Cicely Tyson did not go home short handed winning her very first Tony for her lead actress role in The Trip to Bountiful.
"I had a burning desire to do one more great role. I didn't want to be greedy. Just one more," said Tyson
"You wrapped me up in your arms after 30 years, and now I can go home with a Tony."
