When Kristin Bell and Dax Shepard got engaged in 2010, they announced that they were holding off on their wedding until their gay friends could be married legally as well. So when DOMA was deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court early this morning (June 26, 2013), Bell took to Twitter to ask her fiancé to officially marry her.
"@daxshepard1 will you marry me? Xo #marriageequality #loveislove," Bell’s read earlier this morning. While Shepard didn’t respond to her tweet he did say on his own Twitter, “DOMA is dead. Prop 8 is dead. Now let's bring my big, gay marriage to @IMKristenBell to Life!!!!”
The couple told CNN that the idea to wait until their gay friends could be married wasn’t a way to put off a wedding. Instead they both just agree on the fact that it would be tacky to “have a party when half of our friends ... can't do that thing we're doing. We're not going to ask them to come celebrate a right they don't have.”
Now with DOMA being deemed unconstitutional and Prop 8 being lifted, it seems as though Bell and Shepard could start making those wedding plans. While this news doesn’t ensure gay marriage nation-wide, it is a huge step in the right direction.
