Following the Defense of Marriage Act ruling, Melissa Etheridge and girlfriend Linda Wallem are engaged. The singer announced plans to marry her partner of three years on Twitter.
She wrote, “I look forward to exercising my American civil liberties... and getting fully, completely and legally married this year to my true love of over three years, Linda Wallem.”
Etheridge also wrote:
Lets hear it for the general progress of the human mind. With a beautiful sweep of sweet justice's blind hand we move forward.

“We correct the laws made hastily out of fear,” Etheridge later wrote.
During a phone interview with CNN's Ashleigh Banfield on Wednesday, the “Come to My Window” singer talked about how excited she was that the Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality.
Us Weekly reports that the 52-year-old exclaimed "It is about family and I love my four kids.”
“I'm going to get married in the state of California. I woke [the kids] up this morning telling them the Supreme Court ruling on DOMA. . .I love everybody out there. It's a great day."
