Michael Douglas has issued a statement following a series of ridicule and misinterpretation from his interview with The Guardian, in which the actor seemingly revealed he got throat cancer from oral sex.

His rep has released a statement in light of the comments, according to People, saying “Michael Douglas did not say cunnilingus was the cause of his cancer. It was discussed that oral sex is a suspected cause of certain oral cancers as doctors in the article point out but he did not say it was the specific cause of his personal cancer.”

During the interview, he regretted years of drinking and smoking to which the Behind the Candelabra actor was quoted as responded, “No. Because without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus."

The need for clarification also came from Dr. Maura Gilison, who explained that “oral sex does not cause oral cancer.” Douglas' seemingly open admission caused a particular stir on Twitter as many couldn't help but a href=http://thecelebritycafe.com/feature/2013/06/twitterverse-jokes-about-michael-douglas-revelation-oral-sex-caused-his-throat-cance>make jokes at the actors expense.

The Guardian has since released the audio of the interview, slamming claims that they misquoted the actor.

Douglas was given a clean bill of health in 2011 after several rounds of chemo and radiation.
