After news broke that Disney show Good Luck Charlie would feature lesbian characters, Miley Cyrus and Evan Rachel Wood verbalized their support for the network’s bold decision.
Earlier this month, TV Guide broke the news that a lesbian couple would appear in one episode of the show’s fourth and final season. The characters are parents to toddler Charlie’s new friend.
In explaining the decision to include lesbian characters on the show, a Disney spokesperson said, "This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors. Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness."
Disney’s desire to convey such modern themes has been highly praised by network alum Cyrus, who rocketed to fame playing a popstar on Disney’s Hannah Montana . The “We Can’t Stop” singer expressed her support via Twitter , following up a post by actress Evan Rachel Wood.
E! News reports Cyrus, who is an advocate for marriage equality, responded to Wood’s retweet of After Ellen .
The 20-year-old singer expressed her shock and pleasure at the decision, writing, "Is this true?!?!?! I commend Disney for making this step into the light of this generation. They control…so much of what kids think! Life isn't bright sets & wardrobe & kids becoming superstars! This is INSPIRING."
