How I Met Your Mother star and awards show host favorite Neil Patrick Harris is returning to the Broadway stage for a revival of cult favorite Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Variety reports that the production of the John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask rock musical will start in spring 2014. It will be Harris’ first Broadway gig since How I Met Your Mother premiered. He hasn’t been on Broadway since the 2004 production of Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins.

Still, he has continued to show his love for theater as a director for the Hollywood Bowl’s Rent in 2010 and New York Philharmonic’s Company in 2011. Last year, he directed Nothing to Hide for the Geffen Playhouse.

His other Broadway roles include Cabaret and Proof.

According to CBS News, the rest of the cast for Hedwig hasn’t been announced. The theater, dates and creative team haven’t been set yet, either.

Mitchell starred in the original production of Hedwig and in the 2001 film version. “Who better to pass the wig to but the finest entertainer of his generation?” he said about Harris in a statement.

“I am simultaneously ecstatic and terrified to be stepping into Hedwig's heels,” Harris said about playing the title character, who has a botched sex-change operation. “It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime role and I can't wait to begin the journey.”

NPH is hosting the Emmys in September for CBS. He’ll return on HIMYM in the fall. The premiere for the show’s final season is set for Sept. 23.
