Nelson Mandela’s health has recently been considered in critical condition in a South African hospital on Sunday.
The current president Jacob Zuma said South Africa’s first president’s health has has quickly deteriorated over the past 24 hours, BBC News reports.
Mandela, 94, was taken to the hospital for the 3rd time this year for a lung infection treated earlier this month.
“The doctors are doing everything possible to get this condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba is well-looked after and is comfortable. He is in good hands,” said Zuma.
According to the Associated Press, the president met with Mandela’s wife, Graca Machel, at the hospital.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner was jailed for 27 years as he fought oppressed white government until he was released in the 1990s. Since then, he played a leading role in the democratic government beginning in 1994 and race equality.
Earlier this year, Mandela’s health was not considered serious as Mandela’s grandson told reporters his grandfather was improving from the lung infection. It is believed the infection came from his time in prison where he contracted tuberculosis.
His last public appearance was in 2004.
