James Gandolfini’s body has been released by Italian authorities and is on its way back to the United States where he will be laid to rest.
The legendary star who played the iconic mobster Tony Soprano on HBO’s The Sopranos died last week after suffering a heart attack. His body was released Sunday after the late actor’s sister, Leta Gandolfini, negotiated with authorities in Rome, New York Daily News reports.
Gandolfini’s friend, Michael Kobald, announced the news during a press conference saying, “We have some very good news to announce today. Thanks to the collaboration of (authorities and others), we are now looking at hopefully getting James Gandolfini's remains back to the United States (Monday).”
Kobald adds, "On behalf of the Gandolfini family, I would like to thank the Italian authorities for all of the assistance they have rendered in expediting the formalities necessary to repatriate James Gandolfini's remains to the United States. We are fully aware that this process usually takes seven days and we are extremely grateful for their efficiency in dealing with this matter. We sincerely thank you."
A funeral will be held at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine on Thursday
