Robert Downey Jr. will be reprise the role of Iron Man in The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3.
Downey has kept quiet about whether he would reprise the role of Iron Man for future films. However, a deal has been made for him to appear in two more Avengers movies, announced by Marvel on Thursday. Downey made a estimated $50 million from the last Avengers.
“I’d go start another one tomorrow, but it’s not tomorrow,” Downey told Entertainment weekly. “ And there are a lot of other considerations. But I also don’t like the idea of leaving people hanging or leaving people in the lurch.”
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige shared that he hoped to continue working with Downey in future Iron Man films. “I believe there will be a fourth Iron Man film and a fifth and a sixth and a 10th and a 20th,” he said. “I see no reason why Tony Stark can’t be as evergreen as James Bond. Or Batman for that matter. Or Spider-Man. I think Iron Man is a character just like that.”
Filming for The Avengers 2 plans to begin in March 2014 for a theater release of May 2015. The question of whether Downey will be back for more Iron Man films is still unanswered.
