It turns out that Tim Tebow had to wait less than two months to find out where he would be playing in the NFL this season. After getting released by the New York Jets, the team’s division rival New England Patriots have signed the quarterback.
The news was first reported by ESPN. The Patriots made it official Tuesday morning, but did not reveal the terms of the contract.
According to Boston.com the Patriots released third-string quarterback Mike Kafka to make room for Tebow on the roster.
Tebow is expected to be at mandatory minicamp today at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.
In April, the Jets released Tebow, who never started a game for the team, even after Mark Sanchez was benched. The Jets traded with the Denver Broncos for Tebow and ended the season with a 6-10 record.
While Tebow did lead the Broncos to the playoffs after the 2011 season, his skills as a quarterback have always been questioned. He hasn’t started an NFL game since the 2011 playoff run ended in a blowout loss to the Patriots.
It’s likely that he won't start with the Patriots either. Unlike the Jets, the Patriots have no problem at the quarterback position, since they have three-time Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady.
The news followed a Yahoo! Sports report from over a month ago, in which coach Bill Belichick was quoted as saying that he “hates” Tebow as a player. However, Belichick suddenly decided to debunk the story last week, telling ESPN that it was “untrue, baseless, and irresponsible.”
