I speak from experience when I say that Dads are irreplaceable. They are our coaches, our tutors, our personal chefs and lifetime idols. It hardly seems fair that there’s only one day a year dedicated to their appreciation (though the same can obviously be said for mothers too). The least we can do - as generally under-appreciative young people - is make sure that Father’s Day 2013 is unforgettable. How? With The Celebrity Café’s list of top 10 doohickeys for dads.
1. Tickets – Nothing says “I love you, Dad” like quality time and mutual interests. Tickets to concerts, games, etc. can be a great excuse to spend time together while doing something you both genuinely enjoy. One of my favorite memories with my dad is the Billy Joel concert we saw together when I was in high school. We laughed, we sang, and we’ll remember it for the rest of our lives.
2. Wallet – If, for whatever reason, your schedules are packed and finding time together is less realistic, you can’t go wrong with something he’ll use on a daily basis. A wallet can be carefully selected to address color, fabric, and size preferences. Sites like ThingsRemembered.com even offer personalized plates so you can add a sentiment or joke. Every time he pulls it out, he’ll think of you.
3. Travel sports equipment – Dads like travel gear. Backpacks, water bottles, new sneakers, whatever. Even if they’re not going anywhere, they still can’t make a trip to Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) without something from the clearance bin. So, with that in mind, let’s all stop teasing and cater to their bizarre addiction. Is Dad planning a fishing trip? Grand Canyon? Bermuda? Pick up a new pole, a camelback, or a snorkel. He’ll thank you, we promise.
4. Watch – Let me preface this by saying my Dad has more watches than any one man could need. He has his Dad’s watch, a diving watch, a work watch, a casual watch, a versatile watch, and goodness knows whatever else. But every year, come holiday time, he’ll put another kind of watch on his list. And he’s just as excited by every watch. Assuming your dads don’t have as many watches as my Dad, imagine how excited they’ll be by watch number one! Or two! Check out Amazon for an awesome selection from Invictus, Casio, and Timex.
5. Scrapbook – Sure, it’s a little cheesy, and yes, it’ll take a few hours to do. But it’s definitely one of the most earnest gestures available on Father’s Day. Find some photos of yourself growing up – things he taught you to do or things you did together. Add captions, thoughts, memories, jokes; coordinate with siblings to make it that much more meaningful; and don’t forget to leave space at the end for important moments to come.
6. Sports lessons – Not all Dads are sports Dads. I was lucky – as a sports fan, mine was my soccer coach and we follow the same teams (born and raised as Red Sox loyalist). But if you don’t like tickets and your old man won’t be traveling anytime soon, any kind of sports lesson can spice up a lazy summer afternoon. Take him to the golfing range or the batting cages; rent some kayaks and tour a local lake. It’ll be a one-day vacation, and maybe something you can add to the aforementioned scrapbook.
7. Loafers – I know, I know, oddly specific shoes for a list like this. But who can say no to something that’s stable and stylish? Dad can wear them to work, dinner, your high school graduation and college parent’s day. Just make sure to sneakily check out his shoe size next time you’re, ahem, definitely not taking back the cell phone he confiscated for texting at dinner. And check out GQ’s list of favorites.
8. Household supplies – Obviously I don’t mean that you should go out and buy more Windex. Or toilet paper. Or vacuum bags. But consider the things your dad likes doing around the house. Is he a big fan of landscaping? Technology? Cooking? Tailor your purchase to something he can use for the around-house stuff he enjoys, like sharper hedge trimmers, a subscription to HBO so he can watch Game of Thrones, or a new set of kitchen knives. A happy home makes a happy dad, and a happy dad makes a happy home.
9. Spa Gift Card – I know this one is typically geared towards moms, but seriously…who among us couldn’t use a massage? I know that after a crazy day at work dealing with fire drills and field trips and finals – he works at a school – my dad deserves a way to slow down and decompress. If your Dad really isn’t a spa person, opt for a “Dad’s Day Off” card instead, where the rest of the family handles household obligations for 24 full hours.
10. Remade childhood photos – While this could technically be a part of your scrapbook, it’s also funny and creative enough to stand on it’s own as a card or poster. Find a silly picture of yourself, preferably as a toddler, doing something absurd. Putting spaghetti in your hair, riding your oversized family dog, or throwing a temper tantrum. Then recreate the picture as a grown-up, mimicking the original image as much as possible. You’ll have a blast making it happen, and I guarantee you’ll never forget the look on your Dad’s face when he sees the updated version.
