Fans were ecstatic when news hit several months ago that AMC and Sony TV were thinking about creating a Breaking Bad spin-off series. The series would center around fan favorite Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk), who plays a criminal lawyer. In a recent interview, creator Vince Gilligan dishes on how he and Peter Gould, a writer/producer on the show, are thinking up some possibilities for the spin-off to take action.

In an interview with The Wrap, Gilligan says the spin-off will either be a prequel or a sequel to Saul’s character – and this fully depends on whether or not Saul makes it out alive at the series end. The spin-off could be either a half hour long, in which it will follow a more comedic format, or an hour long, in which there will be more drama.

“As you can imagine with Saul Goodman as a character, a show like that would have to have plenty of humor to it. But also because he works for some pretty scary clientele sometimes, there’d be a bit of drama in it as well. We’re trying to nail that down.”

Since Gould was responsible for coming up with Saul’s character, Gilligan and Gould will be pitching their idea to the network and studio for the spin-off together. If they approve, Gould will be running the show along with Gilligan.

“So we just have to figure out exactly what kind of story we’re telling. Is it a story about his creation of his own character? Because Saul Goodman, as he explains in his first episode, is not his real name,” Gilligan tells The Hollywood Reporter in a separate interview.

One better thing if Gould and Gilligan go with a prequel spin-off: Giancarlo Esposito, who plays big-time meth distributer Gus Fring, says he would love to be a part of the series.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed that something good will come out of this!

The final eight episodes of Breaking Bad are set to air on AMC beginning August 11.
