Switched At Birth’s latest episode “Ecce Mono” brought the idea of “what if” the girls would have been reunited sooner instead of 13 years later.

The episode starts with Katherine and John in the kitchen with Bay and Toby getting ready to eat breakfast. It is obvious that Bay isn’t their daughter as she has dark hair and looks nothing like her parents or brother. John gets a phone call that turns his life upside down as he finds out that Bay is not his daughter. John and Katherine find out that Daphne is their daughter and she is an unstable household. Regina has had a problem with drinking and with the lack of motherly attention Daphne got meningitis that made her lose her hearing.

John and Katherine finally get their dream come true with raising both girls without the existence of Regina. With the court taking custody away from Regina because of her alcoholism she is to stay away until she cleans up her act in rehab. It is definitely heartbreaking to see Regina having to give up Daphne, as she is confused with the situation since she can’t hear anything. Daphne goes to live with the Kennish and everyone’s life and destiny changes.

The episode fast-forwards to the girls being in High School and Bay and Daphne are night and day. Daphne has had cochlear implant and doesn’t know sign language and that moves away from her being consumed by her deaf identity. She is popular, shallow and gets what she wants from her parents. On the other hand Bay is the outsider at school and home. Bay feels like something is missing and doesn’t know how to connect to anyone. Daphne is forced to taking Bay with her to a fraternity party. Daphne ditches Bay within the first few minutes and she leaves since Daphne is ignoring her. It insinuates that Daphne hooks up with a fraternity guy. A mysterious guy riding a motorcycle that turns out to be Emmett rescues Bay.

Emmett encourages Bay to look for her birthmother and finds out information that her dad has hidden. John had put a restraining order against Regina. Daphne and Bay go look for their mom and find Regina’s mom instead. Their grandmother reveals to the girls that Regina is dead. The girls visit their mother’s grave and are extremely mad at their parents for never talking about Regina. It is an emotional moment as the girls feel completely betrayed for the lies and secrets that John and Katherine kept all this time.

Turns out that all of these dramatic events were all happening in John’s unconscious mind. The episode ends with John waking up and telling Regina “Thank God you’re here.” Maybe there is finally a true between the Vasquez and Kennish family, tune in next Monday at 8pm on ABC Family.
