With possibly the most suspenseful season finale yet, The Vampire Diaries season four left us with burning cliffhangers such as Stefan’s evil doppleganger, Katherine’s humanity, and Bonnie’s death and Jeremy’s revival. The Vampire Diaries cast and crew just recently went back to work filming for the upcoming fifth season, and there’s a lot in store for what’s to come.

WetPaint caught up with Candice Accola, who has played vampire Caroline Forbes since the pilot. She talked about how season five would be a slight shift from season four because a lot of the characters are heading off to college. Luckily, she doesn’t think the show will change too much, as we don’t really see the vamps, hybrids, witches, etc. hitting the books.

“It’s kind of a running joke because you never see the kids in high school. So the idea of them going to college is not going to be that jarring of a transition,”Accola says.

In terms of Caroline specifically, Accola believes it would be fun for her to be single in college and (tear, tear, sniffle, sniffle) not focus on Klaus.

“I think it’s important to go into your college years with an open mind, and focus on yourself, what you want in life. The running joke is when fans of the show ask, I tell them, especially the female fans, is I’m looking out for their best interests. Because we have to hire more good-looking men on the show.”

However, there is a lot Caroline does not know – she doesn’t know her best friend Bonnie is a ghost, that Stefan is in a coffin while Silus is out pretending to be him, and she definitely doesn’t that Hayley is pregnant with Klaus’s baby. So while Caroline will have a lot to focus on with her new college life, sooner or later these truths will catch up to her and she will have to find ways to cope.

In the meantime, Nina Dobrev tweeted a very happy picture of Accola posing on the set of the fictional Whitmore College.

Ian Somerhalder also tweeted a picture of Damon’s ring.

What are your thoughts on the upcoming action-packed Vampire Diaries season?
