From the director of “Interview with a Vampire,” comes a new movie about the bloodsucking creatures entitled, “Byzantium.” Neil Jordan selected an impressive cast; Saoirse Ronan of “The Lovely Bones” and “The Host” plays Eleanor. Eleanor’s mother, Clara is played by Gemma Arterton of “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.” The mother daughter duo flee from town to town trying to keep their true identities under wraps.

To earn money Clara works as a prostitute and finds shelter for herself and her daughter from a client who lives at Byzantium. Soon their home becomes a brothel to Eleanor’s dismay. The two ladies are not ordinary vampires. Instead of having fangs they use a long thumb nail to cut into their victims. Eleanor meets a human boy and falls for him, despite the obvious issue of him being a potential victim of her mother’s. Eleanor has a harder time killing humans, whereas her mother finds it easy, especially killing men. Clara’s character had been raped prior to her becoming a vampire and therefore is essentially taking revenge on males over the course of her never ending life. Although the film is not necessarily a feminist film, it does give off the idea that women can be just as powerful and strong as men. “Byzantium” was originally a play written by Moira Buffini, and Jordan has found an exciting way to bring the play to the screen. The film also stars Sam Riley and Caleb Landry Jones. “Byzantium” was released in the U.S. June 28th, 2013.
