CBS president and CEO Les Moonves is speaking out about the recent Big Brother controversy, during which members of this season’s cast spewed racist, homophobic and misogynistic words.

During Monday’s Television Critics Association summer press tour, Moonves said he thinks they “handled it properly” but admits it’s “absolutely appalling” behavior.

"Big Brother, it's obviously is a social experiment. It always was," he told reporters, The Hollywood Reporter reports. "Clearly that's what's happening this year."

He goes on to say, "I find some of the behavior absolutely appalling personally” and he continued to say "It makes us uncomfortable."

The episode with the controversial remarks aired on July 7 and has since been incorporated into the show due to the severe backlash the network has received.

The show aired a disclaimer ahead of the airing of the comments, which they’ve never had to do before.

The disclaimer read “Big Brother is a reality show about a group of people who have no privacy 24/7. At times, the Houseguests may reveal prejudices and other beliefs that CBS does not condone. Views or opinions expressed by a Houseguest are those of the individuals speaking and do not represent the views or opinions of CBS. Viewer discretion is advised."
