Today, Dennis Farina, a beloved cop-turned-actor, passed away at age 69. The Chicago Tribune reported that Farina joined the Chicago Police Department after spending some time with the Army. His acting career began in 1981 when director Michael Mann offered him a bit part in his film Thief, after meeting Farina while location scouting for the movie. He went on to appear in several shows and television movies, and eventually picked up larger roles. Some of his biggest movies include 2000's Snatch, 1998's Saving Private Ryan, and 1995's Get Shorty, but he is best known for his role as Detective Joe Fontana on the television show, Law and Order.
