Claire Danes is on the cover of Vogue this month and gave the magazine a revealing interview, explaining how her career was almost over before she landed the starring role on Showtime’s Homeland.

“I was stuck,” Danes told Vogue about the state of her career after the 2010 biopic Temple Grandin, which earned her a Golden Globe. “It was confusing. I got a lot of plaudits, and it didn't translate into more work. I was really, really struggling during that time.”

According to ABC News, the actress and new mother said that she spoke with legendary actresses like Meryl Streep, Susan Sarandon and Jodie Foster about where to go next.

“You have to pick your battles on set. You have to come to work from a place of love. You have to stay hydrated when you have crying scenes,” she recalled being told. “You have to go to college. And you have to ask for money because there's always more money and they won't give it to you because you're a girl!"

The Los Angeles Times reports that the My So Called Life star went over her craft and spoke about the current generation of young actresses.

“I'm so impressed by Jennifer Lawrence and Carey Mulligan,” she said. “They have this exquisite taste. They are very gifted in their ability to make great choices. I didn't have that rudder.”

Danes and actor/husband Hugh Dancy welcomed baby Cyrus in December. Homeland’s third season starts in September on Showtime.
