This weekend at the Essence Festival, Lil Wayne and Birdman took the backseat, while their teenage daughters greeted fans and signed autographs. Essence Music Festival is held annually in New Orleans, Louisiana, and this year, the rappers’ daughters were there promoting their novel Paparazzi Princesses.
The Associated Press reports that Reginae Carter, the 14-year-old daughter of Lil Wayne, and Bria Williams, daughter of Bryan “Birdman” Williams, wrote the teen novel about stories from their own life experiences. “It's about the ups and downs of having celebrity parents,” Reginae Carter said. “It's about how we go through everyday drama like everybody else.” The novel encompasses the experience of being daughters of hip-hop artists and the rough road to finding your own identity apart from a famous father.
According to Teen Vogue Carter and Williams have known each other since they were babies and have been wanting to write a book about growing up as the celebrity’s kid. The book is fiction, but it is clearly based on real drama and experiences in the girls’ lives. Carter told Teen Vogue, “One day, we said, "Everybody thinks it's just so perfect, but maybe we should tell them how it is." Instead of them just looking at us, they can come into our lives. We feel like not a lot of kids read nowadays, with social media and everything, so we're hoping to put the fun back into reading.”
The girls signed copies of Paparazzi Princesses at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, where the health, beauty, relationships, and education seminars at Essence Festival take place. Carter said, “Every book is not everybody's choice. We hope they’ll read ours.” The book is available on Amazon if you are interested in learning about the girls’ lives.
