Oscar winning actor Denzel Washington is heading to Broadway to star in a revival of Lorraine Hansberry’s drama A Raisin In The Sun.

Washington was in New York for Monday’s red carpet event for his new action movie 2 Guns when he spoke with the Associated Press about going back to Broadway. “We start previews in March,” he said.

The actor explained that his wife, Pauletta Pearson, had motivated him to return to the stage. “I'm trying to keep up with my wife. My wife has been doing a lot more theater than me,” he said, with Pearson at his side.

After New York, Washington said that the two were heading to North Carolina’s National Black Theatre Festival, where Pearson is starring in Power Play. He joked that the next thing for him to do is sing. “She knows I can't sing. But she can sing,” he joked.

According to BroadwayWorld, Washington has appeared on the stage in the past, starring in Fences. It’s expected that he’ll play Walter Younger, the hero in A Raisin In The Sun.

The classic drama opened on Broadway in 1959 and was last revived in 2004 at the Royal Theatre with Sean Combs and Audra McDonald.

Washington can be seen in 2 Guns with Mark Wahlberg on Friday.
