“Frances Ha” is one of the summer movies that adopted “new wave” techniques. The use of black and white allowed audiences to see a new spin on a Woody Allen or a Jean-Luc Goddard film. The movie was written by Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig; Baumbach directed the film, while Gerwig plays the protagonist, Frances. Its initial release was May 17th of this year. The film takes place in New York City, and centers on Frances Halloway, a New York dance company’s apprentice. At the start of the film she is rooming with her best friend, Sophie and she has a boyfriend who wants her to move in with him. In a matter of minutes her life starts to crumble and she finds herself being an RA at her alma matter and living in a dorm on campus. At twenty-seven she finds this far from ideal. Adam Driver from HBO’s “Girls” is featured in the movie as well as Michael Zegen who is also set to play a role on “Girls” next season. “Frances Ha” is of the same vein as “Girls” and has a similar feel to Gerwig’s last film, “Lola Versus.” Throughout the film you will find yourself empathizing with Frances, laughing at Frances and wanting to pull her out of the screen to knock some sense into her. Without giving too much away, one of the most memorable scenes in the film is when Frances ventures off to Paris, with little money, and only stays for a weekend. Baumbach and Gerwig give an honest depiction of a twenty something girl living in the city. Overarching themes of discovery and friendship allow the film to shine through the lighthearted moments and the relatable characters. The DVD will be released next month.
