John Williams will be back to write the score for Star Wars: Episode VII, so fans can stop wondering if J.J. Abrams would bring in his regular composer, Michael Giacchino.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy made the announcement during the Star Wars Celebration Europe event in Germany early Saturday. It was also confirmed with a statement on StarWars.com.
The news should not be a surprise, since Abrams - an avid Star Wars fan himself - commented in May that he expected to work with Williams.
“Again, for Star Wars, it’s very early days, but I believe that, going forward, John Williams will be doing that film because he was there long before I was,” Abrams said during an event for Star Trek Into Darkness in Berlin.
Williams’ score is an integral part of all six Star Wars films, completing the ‘space opera’ feel with his grand scores. The composer won his third of five Oscars for his score for 1977’s Star Wars. He was also nominated for his scores for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
Williams’ other four Oscar wins are for Fiddler on the Roof and the Steven Spielberg films Jaws, E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial and Schindler’s List. He was recently nominated for his score for Lincoln.
In short, a Star Wars film isn’t Star Wars without a John Williams score.
