Lauryn Hill has started her 3-month jail sentence for tax evasion on Monday at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Conn.

The former Fugees singer was sentenced to 3 months in prison and 3 months of house arrest when she’s released back in May for failing to pay nearly $1 million in taxes. Ahead of her sentencing, Hill paid back everything she owed to the IRS.

Recently, Hill posted a lengthy post about her jail sentencing on Tumblr, writing "I shuddered during sentencing when I kept hearing the term 'make the IRS whole' ... make the IRS whole, knowing that I got into these very circumstances having to deal with the very energies of inequity and resistance that created and perpetuated these savage inequalities.”

She also claimed she was just protecting herself and her family from “society” when she failed to pay taxes in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

“Over-commercialization and its resulting restrictions and limitations can be very damaging and distorting to the inherent nature of the individual,” she wrote.
